How Can I Discover God's Will?

"I'm totally confused. How in the world do I find the will of God for my life?" I cannot number how many times through the years I have heard that question.

I could probably list at least 10 ways that God leads His children today, but I will limit myself to the four that I think are the most significant methods of God's leading.

1. God leads us through His written Word.

Taking It Easy with Time and Touch

Maybe it's because I just had another birthday. Maybe it's because I'm a granddad several times over. Or maybe it's because of a struggling young seminarian I met recently who wishes he had been higher on his parents' priority list than, say, fifth or sixth. He was hurried and ignored through childhood, then tolerated and misunderstood through adolescence, and finally expected to “be a man” without having been taught how.

Hope Beyond Failure

Rarely will one of God's heroes show up in the Scriptures having lived a life free of failure. Take Peter, for example. As soon as you read the name, you remember his story. One of the victims was a young New Yorker named Glenn Chambers, who had planned to begin a ministry with the “Voice of the Andes.”

You experience loneliness, discouragement, and isolation, complicated by unending physical or emotional pain. You've prayed and asked others to pray as well. And still, there is no relief.

Let's Get Reacquainted with the Spirit

Let's face it; most of us are intrigued by the Holy Spirit. Like moths, we are attracted to the warmth and the light of His flame. Our desire is to come closer…to draw nearer, to know Him more fully and intimately, to enter into new and stimulating dimensions of His workings…without getting burned. I know that is true of me, and I suspect you often feel the same.
