Ministry Letter October 2018

Dear friend,

People everywhere are hurting.

Much advertising space across media platforms is devoted to pain relievers, medicines, and therapies for physical ailments. People spend much of their time and money trying to alleviate personal suffering. And in one sense there is nothing wrong with that—nobody wants the emotional and physical limitations of pain, illness, or disease. I am grateful for the wonderful medicines we have at our fingertips today.

But what about illness of the soul? As long as we are alive every one of us, to some extent or another, has sickness in our soul. Soul sickness can be things like anxiety, addiction, hopelessness, bitterness, shame, fear, and guilt. Ultimately these are rooted in sin and separation from God, our source of physical and spiritual life.

The Bible’s prescription for spiritual healing is for the soul to be restored to fellowship with the Lord and injuries caused by sin to be repaired. David prayed, “…have mercy on me. Heal me, for I have sinned against you” (Psalm 41:4). Forgiveness of sin by God is part of spiritual healing. “’My wayward children,’ says the Lord, ‘come back to me, and I will heal your wayward hearts’” (Jeremiah 3:22).

Salvation is the greatest healing of all. We were dead in sin but God made us alive with Christ and into new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). When we embrace the Great Physician as our Saviour, God’s Holy Spirit heals our souls and continues healing us as we are conformed to the image of Christ.

Moreover, when Christ returns at the end of the age He will heal and restore His people and all things completely, “…and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever” (Revelation 21:4).

Because people everywhere, including Canadians, are hurting and in spiritual pain we have an urgent opportunity to share the spiritual medicine of God’s Word. It brings spiritual healing, health, and wholeness to all who hear and respond in faith.

This is why what Insight for Living Canada is doing is so important. Together with your support, we are providing excellent biblical teaching programs and resources so the Spirit of God can take the truth of God’s Word and bring healing to sin-sick souls.

But the Word has to be sent out in order for people to respond to it. Without your prayers and financial partnership, we cannot send out what is so sorely needed by so many. Can we count on your gracious and generous support again this month?

I think of the words of an old African-American spiritual, “There is a balm in Gilead to make the wounded whole, there is a balm in Gilead to heal the sin-sick soul.” People look to all sorts of things to remedy their sickness. But there is no other medicine to heal souls today apart from the Good News of Jesus Christ.

This is the message we proclaim and teach and it’s why we need your help. Will you send your financial gift so we can continue sharing truth that heals?

Together with you,

Steve Johnson

Executive Director

PS Sending your gift today provides that much-needed help for soul-sick people who require the healing medicine of God’s Word.
