From Hollywood to Iowa

Each summer, when our kids were young, my wife and I packed up the minivan, strapped the children into their seats (no, I did not advocate spanking), and sped off to speak at a family camp somewhere. Of course the best way for a speaker to gain credibility at family camp is to leave his children at home, but ours always joined us. This is how it should be, I believe, because there is something very comforting about watching the children of the camp speaker smack each other with marshmallow sticks. It sets you to wondering which parts of his sermons he tries at home.

The Power of Faith Stories

Several years ago I phoned my widowed grandmother and asked for a special favour. “Would you please write some stories about your past?” Grandma chuckled. “Why do you want to know about me?” She asked. I glanced at my children as they did their homework at the kitchen table. “Because it’s important for my kids to hear stories about faith throughout our family’s generations.” Grandma hesitated. “There are many tales to tell,” she said. “Where would I begin?”

Laughter and Tears--Generously Given

Have you ever had one of those experiences where joy welled up so deeply inside that you laughed and cried at the same time? You know what I mean—when joy is so overwhelming that your emotions span the extremes. You don’t know whether to giggle or shed a tear. You fight to hold the emotions back, but they emerge with a burst of laughter as tears roll down your cheeks.
