If you Google the words “Looking For,” you will find any number of suggestions to fill in the blank. For example, looking for:
- Mr. Goodbar
- Love
- Alaska
- Men
- Aliens in all the wrong places
- Work
- Pixels
And I’m sure you can think of 10 things you’re looking for, right off the top of your head. We’re all looking for something, whether it’s to meet a need, complete a task, or find fulfilment.
I would like to challenge you to honestly think about what drives you, about what you strive for. Are you looking for temporary things to meet deeper longings? Are you trying to meet the needs of others at the expense of your own? Are you striving to be so independent and self-sufficient that you’re hurting your relationships with others?
Really think about what you’re looking for.
Lyrics from the famous U2 song, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, come to mind:
You broke the bonds and you
Loosed the chains
Carried the cross
Of my shame
Of my shame
You know I believed itBut I still haven’t found what I’m looking for
And from John 4:13-14, “Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life’” (NIV).
