Plans for the Future (February 22 2010)

In Bible College there were a few required courses I couldn’t get out of if I wanted to graduate. One of those was Marriage and Family.

It’s not like I didn’t want to take a course on marriage, or on family for that matter. I just didn’t want to be forced to take a class I didn’t think was useful towards a Biblical Studies Degree.

Whose Plans? (February 15 2010)

People love to quote Jeremiah 29:11. “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (NIV). It is no wonder this verse is so well-loved, it is a beautiful piece of encouraging Scripture. I think, though, that it gains even more significance when read with a little bit of context.

The passage comes from a letter that the prophet Jeremiah wrote to the Israelites who were exiled in Babylon, telling them that God would get them back to Israel—but not until 70 years had lapsed. Seventy years!

Am I Called to be Single? (February 8 2010)

For some reason (culturally, religiously, or otherwise), the fact that I am single, never been married, and 30, makes people uncomfortable.

The most common question I field is: why?

Why are you single? Can’t you find a suitable husband? Is there something wrong with you? Are you called to be single?

To which I respond with silence. Or, “I don’t know.”

Am I Really Saved Forever? (February 1 2010)

Between university semesters, I was a summer camp counsellor. Each summer I took training to answer every tough question the kids threw at me.

Well, not every question.

How could God really create the world in seven days?

Will I see my grandma in heaven?

How many times can I be forgiven?

Quickly I learned the value of wisdom. Before camp, this word really meant nothing to me—it was something old people had, after a lifetime of learning. And, you know, that Solomon guy in the Bible.
